I mean, I just don't see most of the things you mentioned as "flaws" per se but just quirks of the style of game, part of the charm and what makes it different and unique. The story notes in the game definitely help a lot regarding what to do as well. I think they were designed at a time where every japanese gamer bought them so they could easily talk about it and share their discoveries.īut I'd rather have it that way, chat with people on a forum and finding out cool stuff, VS following a guide blindly just because I am afraid to get lost in a short character story. (And there's a lot of subtlety with Fuse and the interpretation of the original ending)Īnd then you have Lute, a character that, without Story menu notes, new game +, and without Fuse's epilogue, is a literal 0/10 (but a 5/10 with those additions, as in not good not bad, alright).Īnd riki is like a 2 because of his gameplay/quest gimmicks. Loved the overpowered stuff you get with him too, it really highlighted the point of his story. No for sure, but I am just saying in the case of this game, it's hard to have one judgement because of how inconsistent the quality is depending on the characters.īlue + his Fuse epilogue was a solid 8/10 for me.

But make no mistake, SaGa Frontier is kinda an incoherent mess. What it has going for it is its art direction and charm. I can’t imagine someone rating this higher than 7/10, but of course, to each their own. That said, I wouldn’t call SaGa Frontier a “good game”. That’s pretty much how I plan on playing it. Honestly, it’s truly remarkable from an aesthetic perspective, and I feel this is one of my favorite aspects of the game.ĥ) This can be a really fun game to dive into every now again to kill some time making incremental progress in the other character’s scenarios. I can’t imagine playing this blind back in 1997.Ĥ) The music, pre-rendered backgrounds, character sprites, and monster designs are absolutely fantastic. The story hints in the menu are helpful, however. The game is not clear at all about what you’re meant to do, and the sparse dialogue does little to help. I played almost exclusively with a guide, and I can’t imagine how long it would have taken me to figure things out on my own. ģ) Unless you have nothing else to play, or if you really just want to dive in and explore on your own, be warned that tris game is very, very obtuse. Sparking new abilities is very fun, however, please read a guide about how different classes gain abilities. You absolutely can grind your way to victory, but you can also be more thoughtful about your set-up and probably make it far without having to grind. It’s like reading a grade schooler’s handmade comic book.Ģ) The combat is seriously addictive. If you are on the fence about this game, I just finished one of the stories (Red), and I’d like to offer some takeaways:ġ) If you’re looking for a good story, look elsewhere.
